SFP Types

  • Short Wavelength (SWL)
  • Long Wavelength (LWL)
  • Extended Long Wavelength (ELWL)
  • Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM)

SWL Fiber Optic SFP Module – Based on short-wavelength 850 nm lasers supporting 2 and 4 Gbit/sec link speeds. This SFP module supports 50/62.5µ, multi-mode fiber optic cables, 50µ cable is recommended.

Note: Short-wavelength SPF modules may be labeled MM (for multi-mode), SW, or SWL (for short-wavelength laser).

LWL Fiber Optic SFP Module – Based on long-wavelength 1310nm lasers supporting 2 and 4 Gbit/sec link speeds. This SFP module supports 9µ single-mode fiber optic cables.

ELWL Fiber Optic SFP Module – Based on long-wavelength 1550nm lasers supporting 2 Gbit/sec link speeds. This SFP module supports 9µ single-mode fiber optic cables and distances over 50 km.

WDM Fiber Optic SFP Module – Based on various wavelength lasers ranging from 1470nm to 1610nm supporting 2 Gbit/sec link speeds. Requires external xWDM mux/demux module to transmit multiple wavelengths simultaneously over a single fiber optic cable. WDM devices support long-distance connectivity to 100 km and beyond.

Passive/Active Copper SFP Module

The Copper (Cu) SFP module is based on the High-Speed Serial Data Connection HSSDC2 interface standards. The module provides a female HSSDC2 connector. Passive and Active Copper cables are currently being qualified.

All of the supported SFPs are of the intelligent variety, which means on-board information about the SFP transceiver can be viewed with the sfpShow command.
